Purpose and Scope of Job:
The U.S. Region On Call Specialist is critical to the successful execution of World Pediatrics’ US Referral
Program, a central part of World Pediatrics’ mission. This program brings patients from our partner
countries in Latin America and the Caribbean who cannot be treated at home or in the region to the U.S.
for surgical care. The U.S. Region On Call Specialist will provide support for pediatric patients and their
guardians, including transportation, personal errands, and other tasks related to the family’s care in St.
Louis and Partner Cities. The specialist will need to commit to one to two designated weekends for a
minimum of 4 hours per weekend.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the US Referrals team to meet patient/guardian practical needs in both St. Louis and World
Pediatric partner cities as they arise between 5pm on Friday until midnight on Sunday for a minimum
of four hours, including but not limited to:
ST. LOUIS Weekend On-Call Responsibilities:
• Support families arriving or departing the U.S. during the weekend by tracking flights, calling
Ubers when needed and staying in touch with volunteers assisting families
• Visit patients and caregivers in hospitals and assist with patients being discharged
• Pick up and deliver prescription medications from pharmacy to families as well as ensure
medication instructions are fully understood
• Relieve program staff/interns covering medical appointments after 5:00 PM on Friday
• Be available to receive and act on important guardian concerns as well as patient needs
• Serve as point of contact for volunteers scheduled to support families
PARTNER CITIES (OUTSIDE OF ST. LOUIS) Weekend On-Call Responsibilities
• Support families arriving or departing the U.S. during the weekend by tracking flights, calling
Ubers when needed and staying in touch with volunteers assisting families
• Assist remotely with patients being discharged
• Be available to receive and act on important guardian concerns as well as patient needs
remotely
• Serve as point of contact for volunteers scheduled to support families
GENERAL Weekend On-Call Responsibilities
• Maintain timely and professional communication with U.S. Referral team for patient updates
and continuity in case management, remaining flexible to respond to ever-changing priorities
• Other practical support of families as assigned
• Complete a short report of weekend activities on Sunday night and share with the U.S.
Referral team
Qualifications and Skills
• 1–2 years of relevant experience in caregiving, community health, or similar roles preferred
• Comfortable working with children and families in medical or community housing setting
• Strong communication skills
• Comfortable communicating non-medical information in Spanish (with help of translation app if
needed)
• High School diploma or equivilent required
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to drive on a regular basis; must have and maintain a safe driving record.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
Work Environment
• A combination of remote work from home (WhatsApp and phone calls) in addition to in-person at
hospitals and housing facilities
• Collaboration with program team via digital platforms (e.g., WhatsApp, phone, email)
Compensation
• You shall be compensated at a flat rate of $100 for up to four (4) hours of work. This amount will
be paid in full regardless of whether four full hours of on-call work are required. If you work
beyond four hours, you will be paid at a rate of $25.00 per additional hour.
